Dental Implants

If you have missing teeth, dental implants can replace your lost tooth roots and provide stable support for crowns, bridges, or dentures.

At Dearborn Family Dentistry in Dearborn, MI, dentist Mark Luria places and restores dental implants.

Why are dental implants the best option for replacing natural teeth?

The Advantages of Dental Implants

Implants offer a wide range of benefits, especially when compared to traditional bridges and dentures. Patients who choose dental implants can enjoy:
Numbers

Natural-Looking Outcomes

Because dental implants fuse to the jawbone, they literally become a part of your anatomy, so they'll never slip or slide. Additionally, our implant-supported restorations are crafted from high-grade materials that mimic the translucency of natural teeth. No one will be able to tell that your smile contains prosthetics.

Numbers

Better Oral Health

Traditional bridges and dentures only replace the crowns of the teeth, but implants restore tooth roots and provide necessary stimulation to the jaw. Implants prevent bone loss, preserve jaw health, and are able to be cleaned and maintained just like natural teeth.

Numbers

Long-Lasting Results

Bridges last between five and 15 years, on average. Dentures have a lifespan of seven to 10 years. Dental implants, on the other hand, can last a lifetime with proper hygiene and maintenance.

Best dentist I've been to. My childhood doctor would be hurt if I told him. Lol! The hygienist was a gem. Very respectful and explained a lot. She even took photos of my problem areas so I could see them. I never had that kind of attention before. The dental assistant held my hand when they injected the numbing solution into my gums! The front desk woman even gave me a break down of all the charges before I went through with it.Thanks for the great service. Super nice.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are titanium posts that fuse with your jawbone over time. Once the bone tissue has healed around a post, it can support a crown, bridge, or denture.

Types of Implant-Supported Restorations

Implants can be used to address localized, sporadic, and complete tooth loss. Our dental team will design a fully customized plan to meet your needs. Here are the most common treatment options at our Dearborn dental practice:

Implant-Supported Crowns

If you are only missing one tooth, Dr. Luria can place a single implant and attach a lifelike crown. Unlike treatment with traditional bridges, this involves no alteration to surrounding teeth.

Implant-Supported Bridges

While traditional bridges rely on adjacent teeth for support, implant-supported bridges are attached to titanium implants instead. As a result, alteration of the natural teeth is not necessary. Bridges replace a row of missing teeth.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Unstable, ill-fitting appliances are common complaints among denture wearers. Dentures can be attached to dental implants so they always stay firmly in place.

Implant Treatment Timeline

X-Rays

Before your dentist can place implants, scans and X-rays must be taken. These images help our doctors determine the most appropriate location for your new titanium implants.

Preparatory Procedures

Our dentists may need to perform procedures prior to your implant surgery, such as tooth extractions, bone grafts, or a sinus lift. These treatments are sometimes necessary for optimal outcomes.

Anesthesia

On the day of your implant surgery, we will administer local anesthesia to numb the treatment area.

Preparing the Jaw

To access the jawbone, your dentist will make a small incision in the gum tissue. Next, they will use specialized dental instruments to create a pilot hole and prepare the site for your new implant.

Implant Placement

Once the jaw is prepared, our dentist will carefully and strategically place the threaded titanium implant into the bone. We use implants from several different manufacturers, including BioHorizon and Zimmer. We will choose the right type of post for your unique needs.

Healing Period

After your implant surgery is complete, a healing period is required before a restoration can be added. In most cases, it takes about three to six months for the bone to fuse to the implant.

Abutment Attachment

Once the healing period is over, you will return to our Dearborn office so we can attach an abutment – or small connector piece – to the implant. The abutment will connect your implant to your crown, bridge, or denture. Once the abutment is in place, we will take impressions of your bite so your restoration can be custom-designed.

Final Restoration

Once our partner dental lab has fabricated your restoration, you will return to our office one more time so we can attach your prosthetic to your implant. Once this step is complete, you will have a complete, fully functional smile once again.

Caring for Your Implants

Dental implants can last an entire lifetime when cared for properly. Follow these recommendations for optimal results:

Brush Twice Every Day

Like natural teeth, implant-supported restorations should be brushed at least twice a day. Use a non-abrasive toothpaste formula. Harsh ingredients can damage your restorations.

Clean between the Teeth

Floss once daily to remove plaque and tartar deposits between the teeth. Ask our dental team for tips and instructions on how to floss with your new implants.

Schedule Regular Checkups

Dental exams and cleanings are essential for the long-term health of your implants. During these visits, we can eliminate harmful bacteria and detect any problems early on.

Preparatory Treatments

Some patients may need additional procedures to prepare for implants. Our doctors at Dearborn Family Dentistry offer these treatments so you can receive all of your implant-related treatment under one roof.

Tooth Extraction

While our dentists do everything in their power to save a tooth, sometimes an extraction is necessary for your health. We can extract a damaged or decayed tooth that’s beyond repair to make room for dental implants.

Learn More About Extractions

Bone Grafting

In some cases, a patient’s jawbone may be too thin in some spots to secure an implant. A bone graft repurposes tissue and moves it to the desired treatment site so patients can still receive dental implants.

Learn More About Bone Grafts

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift raises the bed of your sinuses if they are too close to the desired implant site. After lifting the sinus floor, our doctors fill the raised area with a bone graft so your dental implants can be secured in place.

Dental Implant FAQ

If you don’t see your question answered below, you can send it directly to our staff for a response.

Do Dental Implants Hurt?

With modern technology and techniques, we can make dental implant surgery virtually painless. Patients receive local anesthesia to numb the area, which can be combined with nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) to help them relax during the procedure. The local anesthesia should last up to a few hours after the surgery. Any further discomfort is manageable with prescriptions or over-the-counter medicines.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

With proper care and regular checkups, an implant can potentially last a lifetime. The restorations attached to the implant may have different life-spans; for example, a dental crown typically lasts up to 15 years depending on the material and quality. If you do need a new restoration, we can simply create a new one and attach it to your implant.

Are There Different Kinds of Implants?

Yes, like any other high-grade product, there are many different types and brands of implants. We use BioHorizon and Zimmer implants due to the solid studies backing the product and their unique approaches to implant design that can improve recovery time after the procedure. At the end of the day though, we choose these brands because our patients receive the best results.

What is Osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the process where bone cells attach to the implant surface, integrating it with the jawbone. Most implants are made of titanium due to their biocompatibility and their ability to fuse with the jawbone over time. Osseointegration is an essential part of implant treatment as the bone tissue growth around the implant creates a solid foundation for the restoration.
